INTRODUCTION
Preston
Public Cemetery is located approximately 10 kilometers north of the
Melbourne Central Business District in the City of Darebin which is
part of Melbourne the Capital city of Victoria Australia.
The Cemetery is approximately 14 acres in size with approximately
24,000 graves and as at the start of 2000 there were 25,6000 interments.
The Cemetery grounds are typical of a cemetery established in the
1850's in that it is located on the side of a hill and the perimeter
has been planted with cypress pines. The pathways through the burial
areas are narrow, upto 1200mm wide, which was typical of early Australian
Cemeteries.
Improvements have been made to the Cemetery in recent years, these
include concrete paved pathways, bitumen roadways, street lighting
and drainage. The Cemetery site boasts the largest fully enclosed
Mausoleum in the Southern Hemisphere. With impressive features including
architecture, 24 hour access for relatives, state of the art security
and diversity in style and furbishment.
The Mausoleum is accessible to the Public 7 days per week between
the hours of 8.00am and 4.00pm.
The Cemetery is accessible from sunrise to sunset each day of the
